Otunba Akin Doherty, MBA
Otunba Akin Doherty is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Manchester Consulting Limited. Otunba Doherty began his work career at the United Bank of Africa (UBA), Lagos. He later worked with the Leventis Conglomerate and thereafter, Mobil Nigeria, Lagos and Mobil Europe, London.
Prior to being invited from Mobil Nigeria to serve the Lagos State Government in year 2000, Otunba Doherty had achieved many firsts in the multi-national organization. They include first Computer Audit Manager, first African Staff of the London-based Mobil Corporate Audit Group, the only African Consultant to the SAP-based Mobil Europe Systems Development in United Kingdom, Holland, Spain, Sweden, Norway and Demark for some years; Project Leader of Mobil Nigeria’s JDEdwards-based Systems Development, Controller of Accounting and Finance (west), Retail Manager (North), Regional Manager (East) and Business Planning/Performance Manager for the Company.
Trained in Nigeria and Britain and widely travelled, Otunba Doherty has distinguished himself in the private sector, both locally and internationally as well as the Public Service. He is a versatile Chartered Accountant with over 32 years’ post-qualification experience, is a multi-skilled professional with considerable International and Local experiences in Finance, Accounting, Audit, Computer Systems’ Implementation, Marketing and Transformation Strategy. He was the Honourable Commissioner for Finance in Lagos State between 2005 and 2007. During his tenure in office, he served in many capacities such as the Representative of South – Western Nigeria’s States on the Post-Mortem Sub-Committee of the Federation Accounts and Allocation Committee of Nigeria (FAAC); Member of Presidential Committee on Lagos Megacity Region; Member, Interim Implementation Committee of Lagos Metropolitan Development and Governance Project (LMDGP); Chairman of Implementation Committee on Lagos State New Contributory Pension Scheme; Chairman of Committee on Transformation of Lagos State Board of Inland Revenue (now, LIRS).
Previously in the course of his Public Service to Lagos State, in addition to his immense contributions to the re-definition of Public Service in the State through professional excellence, he had served as the pioneer Honourable Commissioner for Science and Technology in the State and indeed, in Nigeria, after his very successful tenure of Office as the Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Information Technology and Management Services. As the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Otunba Doherty set up the Ministry and also functioned as the Chairman of Implementation Committee of Lagos State Global Computerization Project (the largest Oracle ERP System Implementation in Africa); introduced and accelerated Computer Literacy throughout Lagos State Public Service and established structures to sustain the programme; developed Computer Education Curriculum for the State up to NECO and WAEC level; Chairman of Committee on Lagos State Science and Technology Policy as well as the Chairman of Organizing Committee of the 1st Lagos Science Festival, a strategy for rapid Technological Development which he developed and has since been embraced by Federal Ministry of Science and Technology and other States and renamed as National Science and Technology Week (NASTECH WEEK) and celebrated annually. He also pioneered the use of Solar Energy by Lagos State Government. He is the Chairman of Manchester Construction and Services Limited and Wemimo Farms Limited. He serves as a Director at LASACO Assurance Plc. He is also a Director of Continental Broadcasting Service Limited and Afkar Publishing Company Limited.
Otunba Doherty is a Member and Patron of many Social Clubs is the President of IYA WEMIMO Foundation. Otunba Doherty was personally recognized internationally and honoured with the prestigious “Dr. Kwame Krumah Africa Leadership Award” in year 2007 for his remarkable accomplishments in the areas of Outstanding Achievements and Leadership in Public Service. He is also a recipient of several Honorary Awards including that of his Alma Mater –JOGSOBA (Ijebu-Ode Grammar School Old Boys Association) Merit Award for outstanding Achievers.
Otunba Doherty is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Member of the Nigerian Computer Society as well as member of the American Technology Incubators. He has attended intensive specialist courses in Project Management, Leadership, Computer Audit, Public Private Partnership as well as Business Entrepreneurship and a beneficiary of several professional training and educational programmes of many institutions including the Manchester Business School in the United Kingdom.
Otunba Doherty graduated from the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos and later qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1984. He, thereafter, trained in the United Kingdom as a Computer System Auditor. He also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) Degree with specialization in Marketing Management from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He later earned a Bachelor of Law Degree (LLB Law) from the University of Buckingham in United Kingdom.
